I believe Pete’s story gives a voice to the wide mainstream of people in Australia who experience mental ill-health and mental illness.

I read Stepping Out the Other Side with the backdrop of Simone Biles stepping back from competition at the Olympics. The whole time I marvelled at what an important and well-done book this is. This is the kind of book every person should read because everyone is touched by mental health issues.

Pete Bell is a storyteller and mental illness advocate from Brisbane. His current roles include President of Suicide Prevention Pathways and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Awareness Advocate with the QMR Berghofer Mental Health and Neuroscience research program.
He has released two published books. Stepping Out the Other Side and Subtle Steps on the Other Side. Pete is often asked to talk about these books and share his story at charitable / corporate events, on podcasts, and for the media.
His next book, Sacred Seventh, is currently being written and will be his first foray into fiction story telling.

The voice of someone who has experienced mental highs and lows — and who does the work to stay in healthy mental spaces — is refreshing and relatable, most especially in light of pandemic times that have caused many more people than ever before to face the fragility of their own minds.
